Session Details

FoodCycle Monkchester Cycling Team!

FoodCycle Walker | https://www.foodcycle.org.uk/location/newcastle-walker/

Volunteer cyclists will travel to up to seven supermarkets in Jesmond, Heaton, Byker and Walker to collect surplus food which will then be delivered to Monkchester Community Centre. Cyclists will need a bike, helmet, high-vis jacket (we can provide one if necessary), bike lock and bike lights (when it's dark!).
In order to carry the food, cyclists will either need a bike trailer or pannier bags and/or a large rucksack. We do have two bike trailers which can be shared amongst volunteers.
The Route:

  1. Meeting point, 8.15am: Tesco Metro, Acorn Rd, Jesmond - @ the bike lock ups near the entrance.
  2. Sainsbury’s Superstore, Etherstone Avenue, High Heaton
  3. Co-op Food, Newton Rd, High Heaton
  4. Sainsbury’s Local, Chillingham Rd, Heaton
  5. Morrison’s, Shields Rd, Byker
  6. Asda, Newcastle Shopping Park Fossway, Byker
  7. Delivery point: Monkchester Community Centre, Monkchester Rd
  8. Aldi, Walker Rd, Walker
  9. Delivery point: Monkchester Community Centre, Monkchester Rd
  10. Help unpack and weigh the food you’ve saved.
The time it takes to complete the route varies from week to week, mainly dependent on how much food there is to be collected and the number of cyclists. Usually, the collection will finish between 9.45am and 10.30am, after which you’re free! You are more than welcome to stay and enjoy the free, three-course meal at 12.30pm, cooked up using the food you have delivered.
